Arrowhead Plant
Care Schedule
Syngonium podophyllum, commonly known as an Arrowhead Plant or Nephthytis. Here's a basic care schedule for your Syngonium:
Weekly:
- Water once a week or when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Check for pests on the undersides of leaves and along stems.
Monthly:
- Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
- Rotate the plant to encourage even growth.
Seasonally:
- Spring through summer, feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
- Prune as needed to maintain desired shape and size.
Annually:
- Repot in the spring if the plant has outgrown its current pot.
Environmentally:
- Keep in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves.
- Maintain indoor temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C).
- Syngoniums enjoy humidity; consider a pebble tray or humidifier if your home is dry.
Remember that these are guidelines, and observing your plant's response is the best way to adjust care.
Propagation
Propagating a Syngonium plant is relatively straightforward. Here's a guideline for propagating your Syngonium through stem cuttings:
- Select a Healthy Stem:
- Choose a healthy stem with at least one node (a small bump or blemish on the stem where leaves, roots, and aerial roots grow) and a few leaves.
- Cut:
- Using a clean, sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears, cut just below a node. The cutting should be about 4-6 inches long.
- Preparation:
- Remove the lower leaves, leaving two or three leaves at the top of the cutting.
- Rooting Hormone (Optional):
- Dip the cut end in rooting hormone powder or gel. This can encourage root growth but is not strictly necessary.
- Rooting Medium:
- Place the cutting in a small pot with moist potting mix or in a glass of water. If using potting mix, ensure it's well-draining.
- Environment:
- Keep the cutting in bright, indirect light at a warm temperature (around 70°F or 21°C).
- Watering:
- If rooted in water, change the water every few days to keep it fresh. If in potting mix, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Root Development:
- Roots should begin to develop within a few weeks. If you started in water, once the roots are a couple of inches long, you can transplant the cutting into soil.
- Transplanting:
- Carefully plant the new cutting in a pot with fresh potting mix, being gentle with the new roots.
- Aftercare:
- Treat the new plant as you would a mature Syngonium, following the general care guidelines provided earlier.
Patience is key with propagation. Give your new plants time to establish themselves before expecting significant growth.
